Weekend underage drinking party results in injury to girl

TOWN OF CLYMAN — A teenager fleeing from police at an underage drinking party Saturday night was injured when she fell 15 feet from an old barn.

The teenager, a 16-year-old Sullivan girl, was one of several area teens attending the gathering at a rural town of Clyman residence on Aug. 11. Upon arrival, Dodge County Sheriff’s Department deputies observed two barrels of beer and several males and females gathered around a bonfire. Deputies instructed those in attendance to remain where they were. However, several chose to flee the party on foot, said Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls.

The Sullivan girl disregarded the officer’s order and fled on foot through an old barn. The girl fell from the barn onto the ground, suffering two broken ankles.

Nehls said the teen, who had not been drinking, was transported to Watertown Hospital, where she was treated and released.

Numerous underage drinking citations were issued to the partygoers, whose ages ranged from 16 to 20. Nehls said some of the blood alcohol readings reached up to .18 percent, over twice the legal limit of intoxication.

“This young girl did not need to get hurt; she was not drinking, but chose to run from authorities anyway,” said Nehls. “We have always taken an aggressive approach to underage drinking parties and our stance will not change.”

Nehls said his staff investigates several complaints of underage parties every weekend.
